Huskies’ Fáilte Ireland Posters Short-Listed for IDI Award

Senior Huskies Designer Chris Flynn’s poster series for Fáilte Ireland has reached the final stages of the IDI (Institute of Designers Ireland) Awards. Along with Copywriter Greg McLoughlin, Chris was commissioned to produce three posters which represent each of Fáilte Ireland’s primary domestic programmes: Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland’s Ancient East, and Visit Dublin. The brief was to present these programmes in an aesthetically satisfying way, while demonstrating an intimate knowledge of what they represent. Having worked with Fáilte Ireland for four years now, we were able to incorporate our wealth of key learnings and insights into the pieces.


Chris decided to execute the posters in a stylistic context that’s substantially different from the consumer-facing material we usually produce for the programmes. He and the team agreed a set of references with the client around an illustrative treatment that featured hand-rendered typography and a stripped-back colour palette. This style of execution unifies the posters, so although there are individual concepts for each one, they can still be displayed as a group.


Get Swept Away

The Wild Atlantic Way visual concept merges traditional maritime tattoo art with Japanese Ukiyo-e. This visual style, combined with the copy line, aims to represent the immersive quality and transportive magic of the landscape along the west coast of Ireland.



Where Echoes Can Still Be Heard

With Ireland’s Ancient East, Chris chose to represent the different strata of historical periods as layers emanating from a central location. The image content of the collage and decorative elements in the frame are derived from the visual styles of these various time periods. The harmonious integration of these elements within the layout alludes to how the vivid history of Ireland resides in the landscape.




She Holds My Mind

The Visit Dublin poster is designed as a love letter to the city. For the copy, Greg borrowed a line from Louis MacNeice’s poem ‘Dublin’, communicating the intimate nature of the relationship a person can have with a place. A shorthand portrait of the city is framed like a loved one’s treasured photograph, while the frame is made up of architectural elements that reference Dublin.
