Ireland’s Ancient East: Bringing Stories to Life
Huskies has worked closely with Fáilte Ireland, the national tourism development authority, for a number of years now. Through exciting creative campaigns for Visit Dublin and the Wild Atlantic Way, we’ve brought those regions to life online; Dublin as a vibrant capital city bursting with a variety of surprising experiences, and the Wild Atlantic Way as a unique and exhilarating touring route.
This year, Fáilte launched a new project; Ireland’s Ancient East, and Huskies was tasked with creating immersive online content for some of its many key locations. The premise of the initiative was to present the east coast in a rich new way, highlighting its colourful history and encouraging visitors to explore all it has to offer;
Indeed, such was the wealth of hidden legend, folklore and anecdotes in the region, it made sense to approach the Ireland’s Ancient East site through a lens of storytelling. First off, nine overarching themes were decided upon, each of which showcase a different aspect of Ireland’s rich and fascinating history. Within these themes can be found various key locations, presented as stories. Huskies’ brief was to bring these stories to life through immersive video, image galleries, GIFs and other interactive digital formats.
One of these locations is the Dunbrody Famine Ship in Wexford, which falls under the ‘Big Houses & Hard Times’ theme. This captivating visitor experience tells the story of the many impoverished Irish men, women and children who set sail for a new life before, during and after the Great Famine. In order to tell its compelling story in the digital space, Huskies worked with the team at Windmill Lane to create some beautiful pieces.
This haunting timeline brings users on a journey through the Irish Famine, from the first crop failing in 1845 to the mass emigration that soon followed.
A series of looped GIFs capture what life was like on board the Dunbrody.
A bank of imagery showcases the textures and colours onboard the ship.
